RSS

Chapter 6 in our classroom textbook is devoted to RSS.  I will be honest and say that the RSS is somewhat difficult for me to catch onto.  I think it is a great idea and I am trying to find meaningful ways to use RSS in my computers or social studies classrooms. I am sure that after I have played around with it enough it will make more sense to me.
I am excited to possibly use RSS as a classroom text for computers.  I also think I could make RSS feeds work well as another text in my social studies class.  I think it would be wonderful for a Current Events class or for research.  Have any of my classmates used RSS in their classrooms?  If so, what age group is best to use RSS with?  I am concerned about using this with my 6th graders, but I think my 7th graders will catch on.

  1. Martina, RSS can be a difficult technology tool to fully understand. Think about instead of you going out to several different media sites to read articles, the article come to your RSS Feed Reader. This way all the articles and media you like to read are easy to get to through one URL vs. several.

I would think that any class that uses online media sources would be okay to test out RSS Feeds. I would say test is with your 6th graders. If it does not work, start it with the 7th graders. Great reflection.

  2. I had a hard time figuring out the whole RSS thing as well, but I think I have the hang of it now... enough to get by at least. Social studies would be a great subject to incorporate RSS, and I think that with some guidance both 6th and 7th graders could manage it. If you set up a feed at a starting point, students could read through and pull out current evens to present or post on a current events board. Once they understand how the feeds work, students can set up their own readers and subscribe to feeds that interest them.

  3. I too had a difficult time understanding RSS, however now that I understand how to navigate around it I like it more and more. I can just scan through titles of articles to see one that pops out to me. Everything is located in one area, so I don't have to waste anytime looking for interesting articles.
