Rant of the day....

Ok, I have to rant a bit.....I love technology and I love having my students use it in the classroom, but today something happened that really irked me.  I have my students in the computer lab creating a Glogster on the Inca civilization.  I have two student computers right next to my teacher computer and today one student, who was sitting directly next to me, e-mailed me a question she had about her project!  I couldn't believe it!  She really couldn't have even raised her hand or turned to me and asked?  It blew my mind! Are the days of oral communication over?  I am concerned about these kids being able to properly socialize with one another. Sometimes I just want to take a break from teaching social studies and teach my students some social skills.

  1. I have had this same thought more than one time in my classroom. It blows me away how often students are willing to send me an email, but won't come talk to me about issues they have in the class. I am probably one of the biggest tech nerds you will ever meet, but there is a time and a place for technology. There are some times when a good ol' heart to heart is more important than all the shiny new gadgets out there. It's all about finding that balance. Being the optimist I always try to find the silver lining, imagine if that girl didn't have email, her question may have never been asked. At least her "voice" was heard.

  2. Please... do rant! That would have caused me to rant, too. :) Emailing a question from home or another classroom is one thing, but one seat over? Yes, some students have forgotten how to actually speak. While we love having technology in the classroom, students need to be reminded of the foundation of communication too! This sort of thing has happened to me as well. It's hard to swallow.
